Managing a Urinary Tract Infection

If you are among the millions of people who suffer from urinary tract infections, you also have an opportunity to help yourself.

Just follow these simple steps:
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy or very acidic foods, which may further irritate the bladder.
Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day to dilute the concentration of bacteria in your urine.
Don’t drink lots of water if you’re going to see your doctor; this can dilute your urine sample, skewing the results of your test.
Use a heating pad or hot water bottle to ease your pain.

Eat plain yogurt if you get a yeast infection after taking antibiotics prescribed for your urinary tract infection. The bacteria in yogurt help control yeast.

If you experience severe or sharp pain that comes in waves, or if your urine looks cloudy or bloody, don’t wait — call your doctor for advice.
