Active women who were 65 years of age and older reduced their risk of dying by 50 percent over those who were sedentary, while active women 45 years of age and younger had a 34-percent reduced risk of dying than those who were sedentary.

While the study showed that vigorous activity reduced mortality rates the most, researchers also emphasized the health benefits of moderate activity to reduce the risk of dying. Moderate exercise is easy for most people to perform, especially older and deconditioned adults, and may reduce the number of fitness-related injuries that may be experienced with vigorous exercise.
